Media monitoring tools are extremely useful web applications that help companies manage their reputation on the Internet through fast detecting brand name mentions and timely responding to influencers. These solutions are a clear answer to the question how to monitor social media mentions.

The tools we’ve compared are much more than just Google Alerts alternatives (you can read more about the Google Alerts setup in our another post). In fact, they provide a much wider functionality and more powerful capabilities than the solution from Google. Because of their advanced features like sentiment analysis, integration with other apps and resources like messengers and social media networks, and reporting, all of the listed brand tracking tools offer paid packages. The main differences between paid packages in most of the mentioned tools are the number of available users, alerts (also known as keywords), and mentions per month.

Overview

We will compare pricing and features of the following brand monitoring tools that provide sentiment analysis:

  • Mention
  • Meltwater
  • BrandsEye
  • Brand24
  • Mentionlytics

Comparison

I have tested all above-mentioned social listening tools but BrandsEye since their customer support service refuses to provide a demo access or at least set up a video call with the interface demonstration. In some cases, customer support representatives of each brand monitoring tool provided additional information when it was hard to sort some things out within a trial period.

When testing solutions, I focused on three main aspects:

  • The sentiment analysis accuracy,
  • The number of mentions, and
  • Cost-effectiveness.

Interface

The interfaces of all solutions are very similar and it’s difficult to determine a certain leader. The disposition of necessary elements in each tool has the same principle. However, when it comes to Mentionlytics,  it’s hard to quickly figure out how to add a new search parameter. It’s worth highlighting those brand monitoring tools that provide full post previews together with links and pictures. Thus, there’s no need to click on the link to see the post with a mention. These tools include Awario and Mention. Brand24 has another interface advantage. It provides pop-up hints that help users quickly navigate through the interface.

Functionality

All vendors provide a dashboard with a list of influencers – people that often mention your brand name on social networks or use other keywords you’ve set. Dashboards of all of the analyzed tools have a wide range of indicators like coverage, number of subscribers, and number of posts.

When it comes to reporting, all the tools allow users to view detailed statistics. However, Social Searcher is unable to create a downloadable or at least shareable report.

Anyway, all the tools allow you to not only search by keywords, but also specify additional search parameters, such as a source, minus keywords, and language. Furthermore, Meltwater, Mentionlytics, Mention (custom version only), and Awario have a built-in Boolean search that allows users to set advanced search parameters using special operators.

All of the social listening tools allow users to set up email notifications with the required frequency.

Number of mentions

When testing brand monitoring tools, I ignored predefined limitations of the number of displayed mentions in trial software versions to make conclusions. However, in their trial versions, most of the tools did have a limited number of available alerts a.k.a. keywords.

It’s hard to say which of the tools has displayed absolutely all the mentions for specific alerts, but some displayed much fewer than others. In particular, Mention, Meltwater, and Brand24 provided the most comprehensive and complete list of mentions. At the same time, the latter tool showed the highest number of Russian Mentions.

Pricing

The most affordable social listening tool is Social Searcher. Furthermore, only this vendor offers a free version of its web app for an unlimited period. The simplest package costs only 8.49 euros. At the same time, this solution is best suitable for small businesses.

For other tools, starting packages cost from $30 and higher. One way or another, you can purchase a standard package from any vendor for $100. On the other hand, Meltwater charges enormous €9,000 per year and BrandsEye costs inadequate $20,000 per year. While the Meltwater team justifies the price of their solution with a focus on media and wide integration opportunities, in particular with Google Analytics while BrandsEye explains such an expensive price with the fact that they use human experts to correct their sentiment analysis based on artificial intelligence, thus guaranteeing up to the 95% accuracy.

Sentiment analysis

In terms of media monitoring tools, sentiment analysis is a capability of a solution to determine the attitude of the author to a brand or news described in a certain post. This feature is also known as opinion mining or emotion AI often relies on the artificial intelligence technology.

As mentioned above, BrandsEye provides the highest accuracy of sentiment analysis using manual verification. When it comes to other solutions, they all offer a low quality of sentiment analysis. Some of these tools, Mention, in particular, tag most mentions both positive and negative with “neutral”. Although, Awario sometimes tags neutral news as negative.

None of the tools except BrandsEye can properly analyze sentiment which makes this feature almost useless in most media monitoring tools. The only case where it can be useful is in reports if you manually change incorrectly set tags in advance. However, Meltwater uses artificial intelligence to determine the mention sentiment, which, according to their customer service representatives, help the tool “learn” over the time how to properly tag your mentions. Although, this feature works only with English mentions.
